Hearing from Smith left Reinhardt, French-Owen and Volodarsky "totally floored," Reinhardt says. "It was so amazing meeting an amazing founder."
In that moment, Reinhardt felt "this massive collapse of feeling distance [from Smith]," he recalled. "It's like, 'Wow, a founder is a normal person too. They do normal things. And maybe we could actually be founders.'"After their perspective-changing meeting Smith, Reinhardt, French-Owen and Volodarsky spent the rest of the school year trying to build products with which they could start a company.
"It was pretty obvious that it was not going to work. So, we shut it down and called back all the investors," Reinhardt says.
