During his fifth week of the year-long program, Gleeson found himself alongside 200 recruits who were going through physical training that involved running multiple marathons and swimming dozens of miles in the frigid ocean. They were under constant stress, while also being hypothermic and restless, he said.
"The commanding officer told us to get used to this feeling that we had because this is what it'll be like," Gleeson said. "He wouldn't be the last brother we'd lose." Setting up a new routine or taking small steps each day to accept your pain can help you push through, he added.
