The law should allow social media networks to be held financially liable for libelous false information and damage caused by incitements to violence.

as a significant reason for the costs, instead blaming legal settlements and increased spending overall.

Even so, the company earned $24 billion in operating profit in 2019, and margins have stabilized since then in the mid-30% range. Facebook could afford to add more moderators to block violent and libelous material. Google doesn't break out YouTube profit, but the division contributed $5 billion in revenue in the third quarter of 2020. Overall, Google parent company Alphabet earned a colossal $11 billion in operating income on $46 billion in revenue in that quarter alone. Again, it could easily afford more moderation.

Twitter is the pygmy of the three, and the most vulnerable to increased costs. It earned operating income of $366 million in 2019, but showed an operating loss of $225 million in the first nine months of 2020 as advertisers slashed spending in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic. of the Communications Decency Act, which was passed in 1996.

Do not let the platforms fool you into believing they've suddenly found a conscience with their sudden rush to ban Trump. Where were they when Trump posted "when the looting starts, the shooting starts" in May? A cynic might suggest they're taking action now only because they're scared of lawmakers holding them responsible for the terrifying scenes on Wednesday in the very building where those lawmakers go to work every day.

For what? I thought we had free speech in this country within established limits.

The misguided notion that someone’s opinion counts & must be heard. Hello, it’s your OPINION. Keep it. If it’s misinformation and hate made public well then it’s not an opinion but libel & defamation & last we heard it’s a prosecutable crime. Freedom within BOUNDS and LIMITATIONS

Freedom of speech is not freedom to misinform. When it is then it’s prosecutable as a libellous and/or defamatory statement. If it can’t be substantiated in a court of law and/or by credible sources then it is libel and defamation NOT a right. Include that in your Op-Ed. 😆😂🤣

Umm. Ok. That’s like saying let’s take on the symptom rather than a cure. Rather insipid. It’s time morons understand that freedom of speech does NOT encompass hate & misinformation. It stops being a right & becomes a crime when it transgresses and/or violates another’s rights.

Repeal section 230 ?

Noooo Its time for media to hold Congress liable

Congress needs to make the Law instead of allowing private companies walking the thin line ! They can’t be players and referees ! “ Reform 230 “ !

Absolutely Dorsey and Zuckerberg need to be cut down a peg or two.

I’d rather see republicans in Congress held responsible. At the least the companies are trying to do something.

How bout the liars that lie? It started at the very top and trickled down. And Faux News dba Fox News spewed it.

Get RID OF FOX FIRST

It’s time to hold private companies liable for what the GOP Republicans do!!! God forbid people expose them....

Congress itself can’t hold themselves accountable.... plz :/

THE DOLLAR LOSES 15% PURCHASING POWER EVERY YEAR !!!! DUMP THE DOLLAR AND START SAVING AGAIN with BITCOIN

Negative.... They must not be held liable for others actions. They must not be seen as publishers. And they must stop silencing those nobody agrees with. Let them speak, and the moment they call for violence, let them be arrested and charged.

Your sanctimony is noted. You want social media firms (Mega tech) liable and censured but traditional MEDIA, print and TV, go unchecked to publish/air their fake news?

I would have this CNBC article and photo banned by FTC.

Aiding and abetting would be closer...

without them what proof would you have all the dummies post and stream there

Ok trump.

Social media companies, radio, tv, podcasters . Their must be consequences for disinformation.

What about Fox? And Right wing radio?

Says mainstream media

Disagree. Didn’t even read the article. Hold the idiots accountable not the services they use.

Enough is enough. America broke up the monopolies of Standard Oil, AT&T in the past. Economies thrived from the renewed competition. Where is the courage of this generation?

What about the infrastructure; AT&T, Verizon, and other communications companies that carry data from/to the social media companies? Are they immune?

DUH

When it be time to hold gun manufacturers liable?

Or just hold up to their tos its not that fucking complicated

Are you looking forward to upload product in your E-commerce store with a highly experienced and skilled professional? I will Upload any kind of Products in your Woocommerce and Shopify store With an cheap coast.

How about holding themselves liable? All the networks and social media do is broadcast their lies. Perhaps you are attacking the problem from the wrong side?

Sorry if it hurts your feelings. Grow up. If you don’t like it don’t listen simple

Not to mention if you start legislation to decide who and what can be said opens the door for the elimination of free press. The foundation of our democracy

then it is also time to hold gun companies liable? or does it not work both ways. the people that should be held liable are the people that commit the acts, not companies. can't have it one way and not the other.

finally🙄

In the same way that politicians have never managed to get to grips with gun violence, they will never get to grips with social media. Not because it can't be done, but because politicians are easily bought by the billionaire class.

Wouldn’t you rather have people openly communicating there illegal plans in a open forum. If you shut them out they go underground and have no idea what they are planning

About time Congress took some action

Not to mention Networks!

Social media can be as influential as voting, so it should have as high an ID threshold

time to reverse Ronald Reagans bill!!!

Twitter is not responsible for what it's user posts just as a store is not responsible for what the consumer uses it's products for.

Disagree. That’s like saying you wanted to hold telephone companies liable or pigeons for enabling humans to communicate. It’s time we make ourselves responsables for our own actions.

If you're old enough to remember before the internet, publishers held us in the steely grasp of approved opinion mongering. Amazon and social media helped loosen those bonds. If they are held liable, the same pattern will repeat. Legal speech is not very exciting but necessary.

So when cities where burning down in the summer, that wasn’t the time.

It's been time for at least 5 years, if not more.

Hi , Welcome ! Will be with You in short while . I, Thank You .
