She's a French-Canadian woman who excels in the sciences and she's an astronaut who she wore our flag to space twice. What's not to like? Her conduct,…

Payette’s crashing back down to Earth — that’s not actually intended as a space pun, though it works as one — has been a bizarre spectacle to watch. She was a surprise choice for the governor general job after David Johnston ended his extended term in late 2017. There had been speculation that Justin Trudeau wanted to appoint an Indigenous person, as a tangible sign of his commitment to reconciliation, but when Payette became a possibility, she was apparently too good to ignore.

Her conduct, apparently. Some of the allegations that have been published about Payette’s time in office have been, in a word, bizarre. Resentful of the scrutiny, she apparently tried to evade her security guards, causing them to assign additional manpower, at extra expense, so that they would not be outwitted by their charge. She spent heavily on renovations at the official residence, but did not want to live there.

The perfect GG for this particular prime minister therefore quickly became a particularly awkward one. It wasn’t that long ago, in that nearly forgotten era before COVID, that the PM himself was losing powerful women from his cabinet and his caucus over complaints of rough, hostile handling by Trudeau and his staff. Just as Trudeau began to move beyond those scandals, Payette’s began to emerge.

Privilege

(mattgurney) Here's the larger truth: /nobody/ has any business being Gov-Gen, because the Crown has become a useless institution that doesn't have any business 'ruling' anybody. NotMyQueen

Agreed. She wasn’t properly vetted as Trudeau was going for the photo op of him choosing a female French person! He makes me sick !!!

And one must wonder why the timing on this to blow up now - what else is going on (like abysmal vaccine deployments) that our focus is being diverted to this story?

Real_Dr_Roy The GG fiasco is all on Trudeau.

Exactly how I feel! juliepayette

Well that's appropriate Justin Trudeau doesn't have any business being prime minister

No she did not. Another absolute failure of Trudeau.

Partisan liberal appointment. From SNC country.

Everyone thought after she abused her husband and killed a pedestrian she was perfect for the job.

Racking my brain to think of a Jewish GG. Has there been one?

“...Chronic civic illiteracy of Canadians...”, 😂 great line, true story.

Not according to Trudy boy.

Ya sounds like she was a cunt

So NASA doesn't vet anybody? 🙄

Yup. A terrible choice and a bad decision not to properly vet her. That position while mostly ceremonial in nature still requires a person of character and respect, she obviously has neither of these.

Trudeau’s choices are more to satisfy optics and the media than qualifications...

Most of Trudeau cabinet have no business being in their rolls as well!

Hey canadianpm here's some criteria for the next GG - someone nice to their staff - someone that knows how to manage & qualified - someone that won't spend taxpayers money like water - someone that isn't a astronaut - someone that can represent Canadian values ottnews

TrudeauWorstPMEver throws the women he hires/appoints under the bus or they throw themselves under the bus. Anyone knows why? Asking for a friend.

It is largely a ceremonial role. Often just prominent Canadians.

Sexist?
