When investors expect economic growth to slow, interest in defensive sectors — health care and utilities — tends to perk up. Meanwhile, the utilities sector on average is trading closer to the index than it has. The prolonged low-interest-rate environment may help explain the higher valuation for the utilities sector, which is associated with attractive dividend yields.
