Australian media companies are concerned about some rules outlined to govern televised debates in the lead-up to a federal election. auspol electiondebate

Local media companies are expected to knock back an initial proposal for the creation of an Australian Debates Commission, raising concerns that some take-it-or-leave it measures the government is proposing to implement are too restrictive.

“Free TV members welcome the government’s proposal to establish a Debates Commission. Election debates are an important part of our political process, giving voters a clearer understanding of the choice they are making, and it is high time we ended the debates about the Debates,” Ms Fair said. Earlier this month special minister of state Ben Morton wrote to federal leaders of the parliamentary and organisational wings of the Liberal and Labor parties, major media companies, the National Press Club and the federal parliamentary press gallery, outlining the way in which a commission would work.

It also requires agreements of the commission to be based on consensus and that all deliberations of the group to be confidential. The commercial broadcasters are also concerned about the government preventing them from registering audience approval.

The government is running scared and now wants to control every aspect of how the media can format a debate, this might work in Russia or China but it’s unheard of in a democracy

Does anyone ever watch them now?
