The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission alleges the company engaged in false, misleading and deceptive conduct by publishing scam advertisements featuring prominent Australians.
The ACCC alleges the advertisements — which promoted fake cryptocurrency investments or other financial schemes — were likely to mislead Australian consumers. It alleges the advertisements used images of businessman Dick Smith, TV presenter David Koch, and former New South Wales premier Mike Baird."The essence of our case is that Meta is responsible for these ads that it publishes on its platform," ACCC chair Rod Sims said.
"It is a key part of Meta's business to enable advertisers to target users who are most likely to click on the link in an ad to visit the ad's landing page, using Facebook algorithms.Speaking to the ABC, businessman Dick Smith said he was "glad" the ACCC was taking action.More to come.
Good! I hope that they get fined enough to make a change. Facebook ads are often scams, or clickbait and they need to take responsibility to vet any ads before they allow them to be placed!
these companies are happy to take the advertisers money. Claiming it's not their responsibility is a cop put as they don't want to resource protecting customers. Goggle and it's YouTube are in the same boat. So many scam ads they just ignore as revenue is all they care about
They'll just take it out of petty cash
The internet creates a vast dynamic the planet has never seen, it's called a Paradigm Shift, every paradigm shift throughout history has required major reform, yet no country on the planet has even acknowledge that need yet. Old-World powers are re-emerging, Titans of Tartarus.
It honestly seems like Facebook is a textbook example of what not to do.
Facebook is too busy censoring normal conversations between adult users to worry about actual crime on their site...
