Australia has some of the largest critical mineral reserves in the world, but it's missing out on potentially huge profits. That's where a domestic electric vehicle industry could come in.

There are some downstream processing projects onshore, but they are all in the very early stages of development.

Gail Broadbent researches electric vehicle uptake at the University of New South Wales and argued there was a large consumer appetite for a domestic supply of EVs. "There's no plan at the moment for an electric vehicle strategy at all. All it is is just throwing a little bit of money here and there to make it look like we're doing something," she said.Cobalt from a mine near Broken Hill will be processed into EV battery-ready material for export as there is no domestic market.

Twenty years past time to be into EVs

Excellent article. Congratulations.

I don’t think Australia has a strong enough market for a locally made EV (it would probably need to be subsidised). However, I think we have a strong enough market for Australian made batteries and/or solar panels.

I know where there’s a couple of old car manufacturing plants not doing a whole lot since they were declared unprofitable

Why do we have an executive vehicle tax when we have no car industry ?

Are Aussie made EVs then new bullet train from Melb to Syd…? a leftist con

🙄

EV are not the best future technology Hydrogen fuel cell is the best future.

It's really simple, we don't have a large enough domestic market to sustain a car industry.

Why should EV's be any different to our other resources, the companies that dig up our minerals are and will be international conglomerates. Just like meat, wool, iron ore, bauxite and the rest the profits are made by processing in dirt cheap third world countries.

9 day fortnight, employer funded super, leave loading, 4 weeks annual, 10 days sick pay, carers leave, maternity leave and long service leave with a small population = we can’t compete globally.

Clearly this is a good idea. Australian manufacturing should be able to provide EVs and renewable power. Blind Freddy could see that.

The majors have been 'talking' about manufacturing for decades......and always around election time. Australia is tired of the manufactured promises. Vote them out!

How long have we been mining iron ore for? Not many want to manufacture anything in Australia sadly

Totally agree.

Voters in Kooyong have a chance to make a difference on this one:

We are probably better off doing value adding. That can be going from ore to metals ready for use or even to cells. We simply don't have the capability to supply a range of cars that the market demands. Another Motor industry is gone. Iveco has closed its production plant.

Nope. Climate change is a hoax

Yes already!!!
