Over the decades, the beauty industry was pushed to evolve toward inclusivity thanks to, in large part, Black women and men who blazed their own paths

Photo-Illustration: The Cut; Photos: The Black Beauty Effect You know how today’s beauty brands compete for the most wide-ranging makeup palettes of shades and tones? Yeah, it wasn’t always like that. — through founding their own brands, creating content, and gracing magazine covers — and found massive success along the way.

It’s this influence that The Black Beauty Effect, a three-part docuseries airing on Xfinity in the fall, explores. As filmmaker Andrea Lewis explains in a statement announcing the upcoming series, “I’ve always wanted to create a story that captured the fullness of our impact in the beauty industry, from the celebrity makeup artists, the Black beauty editors, and the countless beauty content creators.

Each hour-long episode will be dedicated to a different aspect of beauty: hair, skin, makeup. Expect familiar faces like host and editor Elaine Welteroth, celebrity makeup artist Sir John, and Bob the Drag Queen — as well as beauty founders like Topicals’ Olamide Olowe, Carol’s Daughter’s Lisa Price, and the Lip Bar’s Melissa Butler — all having candid conversations about more than just the glamorous side of the industry.
