has been supported by deep pockets from both corporations and governments seeking to ensure future supply of this critical mineral.
Vanadium redox flow batteries use tanks of liquid and charged vanadium electrolytes to produce and store energy. Unlike lithium batteries, flow batteries don’t decay after each use, can deliver energy over a longer period, are non-flammable and don’t explode. The vanadium electrolyte can be re-used, resulting in less waste at the end of life.
The previous federal government noted vanadium’s importance, listing it as one of 13 critical minerals and metals in areas of opportunity for more advanced processing. With a future need emerging, there is a growing number of vanadium explorers on the ASX keen to play their part. How, or if, the federal government supports them is yet to be determined.
