Move comes following January announcement that parent company Alphabet would shed 12,000 jobs globally

Staff at the Irish business have been waiting to hear about their fate after parent company Alphabet announced in January it would cut up to 12,000 jobs globally, around 6 per cent of its workforce. The cuts were expected to affect all areas and regions of the business.

Google employs 5,000 people directly in the Republic, with an additional 4,000 contract and temporary workers. It has invested billions in Ireland in the past 20 years, including more than €1.5 billion in the past five years. Staff in the United States were informed of the cuts shortly after the initial announcement, but employment laws here meant the process would take longer internationally.“Over the past two years we’ve seen periods of dramatic growth. To match and fuel that growth, we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today,” he said.

The tech giant is one of an increasing number to announce job losses, following news that Microsoft was shedding 10,000 roles globally. In recent days, Dell and Ebay have also said they would cut jobs. Other tech giants have also been trimming staff numbers, with Amazon cutting 18,000 jobs, and Facebook owner Meta Platforms, Twitter and payments firm Stripe have also cut back in recent months. Salesforce, Intel and Zendesk have also been hit by job losses.

Likely one of those where it makes zero difference to the output of the company

Caused by brexit right? Or climate change? Far right racism? Am I getting close at least…

They've been monitoring the WFH people, the median are not working so much. So this is the result. Corporations want their big profit model back. ChatGPT and AI will end most white collar jobs, because it will be more profitable.

Just the beginning of the techie recession. More to come as AI takes over.

They’re only getting rid of the wasters and the troublemakers - you know them: the crowd that are always late, and the ones that think they are “entitled” to be able to wfh every day.

That's sad because they are a great company

Aww poor rainbow and pronoun people. My heart breaks for them.

This is only the start. Remember the day you read it.
