Company involved in NYC crane collapse tied to previous disasters, shady ‘King of Cranes’

Wednesday, injuring 12 people, was founded by a shady construction magnate and self-proclaimed “King of Cranes” whose machines were involved in two deadly incidents more than a decade ago.

The Queens-based company was founded and operated by the late James Lomma, a controversial, bombastic Staten Island native who dubbed himself the “King of Cranes.” He died in 2019.Gregory P. Mango The first incident took place at 303 E. 51st St. on March 15, just a few days after a caller told city officials that the 22-story-high crane lacked proper safety ties.

On May 30, another New York City Crane & Equipment crane collapsed on East 91st Street, killing crane operator Donald Leo, 30, and worker Ramadan Kurtaj, 27.
