The gene editing technology CRISPR, which has already spawned several startups aiming to use the tool to develop new therapies, is now the inspiration for a new company in a less-crowded space: diagnostic testing

licensed from the University of California, Berkeley, that was developed in the lab of early CRISPR researcher Jennifer Doudna, raised $23 million from investors including Mayfield, 8VC and Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Sherlock Biosciences cofounders Omar Abudayyeh, Jonathan Gootenberg, Rahul K. Dhanda, James J. Collins, and Pardis Sabeti.Omar Abudayyeh and Jonathan Gootenberg, also Sherlock cofounders, developed the company’s eponymous technology in Zhang’s lab collaborating with Collins.

Sherlock Biosciences has also licensed another technology it’s calling INSPECTR, which recognizes DNA or RNA in the same way as SHERLOCK, but has a different mechanism to signal a hit. When the system matches with the DNA or RNA sequence it’s looking for, it’s like two pieces of a puzzle coming together, says Collins, who developed the system: “It now allows that puzzle to become a machine that will make a protein,” reporting detection.

Analysis | The Technology 202: Europe is leading the crackdown on tech companies and competitionAnalysis: Europe is leading the crackdown on tech companies and competition Slowly but surely we have been abdicating, abandoning, ignoring our leadership in the world, or just ignoring facts thus leading to mistrust and hence loss of said leadership. Welcome to Trump’s legacy! This is good. Monopolies are bullies. I also hate to see startup creativity sold out to Google through acquisitions. Of all the industries to be most monopolized, it's our information highway. I'm looking at you too, Comcast.
