Northern Irish golfer romped to win at Quail Hollow after stunning back nine performance

Rory McIlroy secured back-to-back PGA Tour titles after a stunning performance on the back nine saw him overhaul Xander Schauffele at the Wells Fargo Championship. After trailing Schauffele by a single shot going into the final round world number two McIlroy ripped up the course with an with an inward 32 to add to the Zurich Classic title he won alongside Shane Lowry a fortnight ago.

The Northern Irishman's six-under 65 saw saw him finish 17 under, five clear of Schauffele and seal a fourth victory at Quail Hollow. It sets McIlroy up well for for next week’s US PGA Championship at Valhalla – the scene of his most recent major victory in 2014. “Coming into this week, at a golf course I am comfortable with, my golf swing feels more comfortable than it has done," McIlroy told Sky Sports. “Going to a venue next week where I have won, it feels like the stars are aligning a little bit."But I have a lot of golf to play and a lot of great players to try to beat. I am going into the next major of the year feeling really good about myself.

This was McIlroy's fourth victory at the Wells Fargo Championship, but it has never been worth more as year’s edition was a signature event on the Tour schedule, with a $20 million purse. McIlroy walked away with $3.6 million, almost £3 million, taking his Wells Fargo career earnings to $9,463,076. That takes the Holywood man to $86.6 million and within $10 million of Phil Mickelson, who is in second place in the all-time official career Tour earnings. Tiger Woods tops the list with $121 million.
