Lawmakers and industry expert hope seafood task force will boost the struggling industryANCHORAGE, Alaska - Lawmakers and Alaska seafood industry experts hope legislation passed during the legislative session will boost the $5.7 billion industry, currently struggling with a range of issues, including meager prices and plant closures.
“A lot of these issues affect federal management, and really, asking the United States government for support with tariffs,” Vance said. “We face extremely high tariffs that just really affects the price that our fishermen get for their fish.” “Alaska produces 65% of the domestic seafood in the United States, and so we want to make sure that Americans are buying Alaskan seafood,” Vance said.
Vance said the task force will also examine ways to help struggling processors and coastal communities.
