San Antonio is getting prepped and pepped for Hatch chile season at H-E-B and Central Market. Each year, during the height of the city’s searing summer, the San Antonio-based grocer hauls in a smorgasbord of products that use the glossy green pepper as a star ingredient. In August, the stores load in over 125 tons of peppers, which they source straight from Hatch, N.M.
San Antonio’s Maria Flores earns first place in H-E-B’s 2024 Quest for Texas Best brand competition “We’re excited to share all kinds of Hatch-filled favorites and talk about the many different ways to prepare Hatch-themed meals with our fellow Hatch heads,” the grocer said in its news release. Both H-E-B and Central Market offer hundreds — yes, hundreds — of Hatch-infused products and recipes, from sauces and sandwiches to baked goods and cheeses. They even have desserts.
