Mayor Sandy Stimpson's administration has decided to move on after the contract expires next year for the system some say is too costly.Rob Lasky, Mobile’s executive director of public safety, pointed to cost as one reason why the administration did not believe the city was getting enough “bang for the buck” from the system that it installed in 2022 to combat gun crime.
ShotSpotter involves sensors in a certain area that pick up the sound of gunfire. Technicians review the recordings and if they determine it to be gunshots, send alerts to police dispatchers. The company claims the system can greatly improve response time and – possibly – save lives. Jackson said 911 call rates have improved due to other efforts, like old-fashioned outreach efforts by cops on the beat.
“To show them that their public safety matters to an administration and people are showing up when gunfire happens is incredibly important,” he said.
