The allegations emerged at the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrates Court, East of Pretoria, where Liebenberg and eight co-accused including his wife appeared on charges related to an alleged diamond investment scam.Seven co-accused have since been granted bail.Liebenberg’s lawyer told the court that his client was moved to a single cell in the prison’s maximum-security section, where the alleged abuse continued.
“The head of the prison, Mr. Smith and Mr. Meyer, already received him there which is strange. While receiving him, they received a phone call from the minister, Mr Groenewald who told them in my client’s presence over the phone that they must make his life in prison. Since then, everybody that he was in custody with got assaulted. In the evening they came to his cell and made him strip naked and said we know you have got a phone,” says Liebenberg’s lawyer.
