Chohan Carriers is suing the City of Maple Ridge for $27 million in damages, alleging that the city's actions prevented the trucking company from operating at a Hammond site. The trial, originally scheduled to begin on Jan. 6 in Vancouver, has been adjourned. The city requested the delay after Chohan submitted new financial information in October.
The plaintiffs, Chohan Carriers and Chohan Investment Group, claim the city engaged in 'misrepresentation and misuse or misfeasance in public office' regarding the investment group's property purchase. The Hammond site was intended for Chohan Carrier's transloading and freight operations, but the city's actions, including weight restrictions and road closures, effectively shut down the business. Chohan started operating at 19966 Wharf Street in 2017, but neighbors complained about large trucks on narrow streets, leading to a semi-truck accident. Mayor Nicole Read, who was in office at the time, stated that the legal department handled the situation. The company now seeks compensation for lost revenue and property devaluation
