Nationals Deputy Bridget Mackenzie says new laws will help stop vegan activists from putting Australian farmers out of business. Activists who publish material inciting others to illegally trespass on private farms could face up to five years imprisonment under a bill to be introduced to parliament this week.
The bill was drafted after activists published online the addresses of thousands of farms that they allege are engaging in animal cruelty, activity the producers deny. Senator Mackenzie said the bill has exemptions for journalists and whistleblowers who are disseminating information about animal cruelty. She told Sky News that the government is taking a ‘tough stand’ and ‘backing farmers’ against these farm ‘invaders.
