In the world of, "fiduciary" is a term that means they have to put your needs ahead of their own. A fiduciary is held to a higher ethical standard and agrees to take care to manage your money in the best way possible.
Advisers who are not fiduciaries may be paid in other, more unscrupulous ways. For example, some advisers get paid a commission or referral fee for sending client assets to specific mutual funds. Advisers may want to put your money there to get paid more even if it isn't the best fund for your financial goals.
