Greenlanders are weighing up the delicate balance of economic growth, foreign influence and their environment as an election campaign largely centred on a Chinese-backed rare earth mine ramps up.

That has included annual trips to China to promote investment in Greenland, in fisheries, mines and more — and China is interested.

But it's risky business, environmentally and politically, especially when a superpower is involved, and hoping to mine uranium from the same vein. Opponents say the proposed open-pit mine would deface a pristine and fragile ecosystem in the only part of this mostly ice-covered island, where climate change's warming temperatures allow new farms to provide Greenlanders with lamb, vegetables, strawberries and even honey.

Tensions over the Kvanefjeld project came to a head in February, during the public consultation period. A bomb threat was called in. Emotions ran high. China's government pitches its interest in investing in Greenland as a win-win that will help Greenland diversify its economy, while helping China retain its near-monopoly on the global supply of rare earths.

An organization that doesn’t understand or believe in the rule of law nor kindergarten basics such as the presumption of innocence and the concept of evidence, pleads “science” on climate change 😂

RareX, check your share portfolio. Are you profiting from environmental degradation and climate change acceleration in the Artic?

Greenland's government in seeking foreign investment, might lead it down the same path as some Pacific nations, where they have a huge debt to China.

i am so sick of our media always bias against China but then kissing the US ass. They should realize all countries act in their own interests especially in a commercial contract.

Go away! Climate change my foot

ABC firms up its Cold War rhetoric, somewhat subtly in this one. In the end, a commercial contract is formed that specifies exact conditions for any investment arrangement. These conditions look the same if it is China, US, Russia, Canada. The whole thing is fear mongering.

Of course China wants in! Countries need to double think the consequences involved further down the track when dealing with China? Australian bureaucrats sold off a strategic shipping port (Darwin) and an island (Keswick) 34 km off the east coast? What else are we unaware of? 🗺
