The plan failed to materialize, although at least the ISS is still there. The same year as the Spacehab announcement, Russian company MirCorp launched two cosmonauts to the abandoned Mir space station with plans to reactivate it for use as a filming facility. However, insufficient funding meant the station was de-orbited the following year, breaking up in a fiery re-entry not unlike something from a movie.
More recently, Russia launched actor Yulia Peresild and director Klim Shipenko to the ISS, where they shot footage for an upcoming film,, about a heart surgeon who must perform an emergency operation in space. They returned to Earth on Oct. 17 after 12 days in space. The movie has not yet been released.Elon Musk rejects claims he is hogging space: ‘A couple of thousand satellites is nothing’
S.E.E. is the company co-producing an upcoming shot-in-space feature starring Tom Cruise and directed by Doug Liman, though that project has yet to get off the ground. When it was announced in July of 2020, the untitled Tom Cruise/SpaceX Project was billed as being the first feature film to be shot in space, though that boast is also debatable.
Mission commander Walter Schirra showed off his space-grown beard but would not admit to there being any grey in it. “My hairdresser’s the only one that knows,” he said, a reference to a 1957 commercial for Clairol hair products , and therefore possibly the first commercial shot in space. As the astronauts passed the camera around, Schirra quipped, “You’ve got three professional cameramen up here now, so when we get back we expect to get our union cards.” If that’s not the first studio in space, I don’t know what is.
