taking advantage of a visa scheme for Hong Kong citizens in Britain, foreign business chambers say their main concern is the city’s quarantine rules.
Australian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong representatives met officials from Beijing’s liaison office earlier this month. They raised concerns that the rules were hurting the city’s status. Australian business, along with other foreign business groups, has also been lobbying the Hong Kong government on the issue.
The trend reflects similar surveys by other business chambers. More than 40 per cent of members of the American Chamber of Commerce said earlier this year they were considering leaving.Mr Quinlivan said it was hard to predict the long-term impact of national security laws on foreign companies in Hong Kong, but he was optimistic about the city’s future.
“Hong Kong has a huge number of advantages. Some of those advantages are declining but … I would be surprised if many corporates hit the red button and say we are out of here completely.”There were some signs this week that Hong Kong and mainland China are prepared to relax border controls. Hong Kong’s incoming health minister, Lo Chung-ma, said the city was considering cutting hotel quarantine for travellers to five days, with another two to be spent in home isolation.
