A shop that started with Andrew Citarella selling meat from his front porch in 1901 has shut its doors

“I’m just going to walk around and cry,” Eileen Toomey said, standing inside Citarella’s Market, a Red Bank institution for more than a century. But first Toomey, one of countless loyal customers paying their last respects earlier this week, asks Andrew Citarella to slice up four New York strip steaks — one and a half inches thick each, please — before she looks around the store, where the shelves are stocked with sauces, vinegar, artichoke hearts and peppers and a whimsical sign on the wall reads: “Tip Your Butcher. They Have Knives.”
