Extreme weather conditions brought about by climate change will continue to place residents of informal settlements at risk, according to Gina Ziervogel, an associate professor at the University of Cape Town. | News24_Business

, with the majority in the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. Half of these settlements are in metropolitan municipalities. The latest reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change confirm that there will be an increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather conditions such as floods, droughts and heatwaves, says Tafadzwanashe Mabhaudhi, a climate scientist at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

South Africa has already seen the consequences of climate change this year. An attribution study has revealed that by the flooding."The situation in informal settlements is quite complex," says Ziervogel. Often people are settled on flood plains or areas that are meant for detention ponds, which are for moving water away from surrounding areas.

"If you are located below the flood line, it means that the chance of flooding each year is increased by 50%," he adds.Sanya says people living in informal settlements are also vulnerable due to their socio-economic conditions because they are unable to protect themselves from extreme weather conditions.

"I do not think there is enough focus on informal settlements currently when climate risk is considered. We are seeing cities present climate adaptation plans but more needs to be done to ensure that those in lower-income areas are included in that planning and that their needs are met," she says.

_Business Surely News24 reads the reactions to their posts which are generally 90% negative and then try and adjust the amount of bullshit being conveyed... One would think, but every post just keeps getting dumber, I would think they would have run out of subscribers by now

_Business Every time I see a News24 post it feels like a just sat on a cactus.

_Business It is getting colder because it is getting warmer. Got it!!!

_Business It's not informal settlements, it is squatter camps, filled by mostly illegal immigrants!

_Business Gina -You have missed the obvious that we can all see

_Business Lies lies lies!!!

_Business People who build housing in the flood zone, will ALWAYS be at risk. A government who are incapable of moderate planning, will create chaos on top of this. We get what we elect: Stupid.

_Business Well the pple in the pic shouldn’t be erecting houses there. That’s why there is planning, and common sense rules.

_Business Climate change my backside, Government failing to ensure thay people set up shacks in areas not fit is causing this, millions of illegals streamjng to South-Africa destroying infrastructure building their shacks right next to rivers and then using it as their Toilets.

_Business Climate change. FFS 🤦‍♂️

_Business Rubbish, it's lack of infrastructure due to building in the wrong places that causes it. Stop trying to make climate change the cause for everything.

_Business Climate is a hoax. Ask any independent, self respecting scientist. This Gina banana should read reputable scientific studies on the climate change hoax:

_Business What utter crap. Building on unsuitable land is a far bigger driver.

_Business Tell them to move away from the rivers.

_Business LOL!

_Business Did Gina Ziervogel check why squatters keep putting up shacks below floodlines?

_Business

_Business Please provide evidence for your claim that it is climate change. You have zero credibility left and should feom now on cite peer reviewed research papers with all claims. Alternatively we will simply point and laugh. Your choice

_Business News24 will believe anything, including this Bullshit from a so called educated degreed person. Thank Goodness I don't subscribe to News24!!

_Business Strait from wokeville University

_Business Ah Spews24 and a UCT expect, the perfect combo of BS!

_Business That is so much rubbish. Do you not cringe when you press tweet.

_Business They placed themselves at risk when they built their shacks on marshlands and floodplains.

_Business Climate change has nothing to do with stupidity and going back and building on the same river bank and river bed! Good grief, you have a degree Gina

_Business Jeepers you guys are experts at spreading 'the narrative' aren't you 🤦🏼 Ever heard of such concepts as '100 year floodline'? No? Didn't think so.

_Business What a load of kak. Don't build a shack in a flood area.

_Business My bullshit detection meter just red lined.

_Business Plant and nurture trees.

_Business When exactly did global warming become climate change. Probably around the time the definition of vaccine was changed?

_Business When leaders start spueing Amarican propaganda non stop. Like they did with Covid we in trouble

_Business Explain what you mean 'climate change'.

_Business Is there any official study that can be sent to the Government? An infrastructure of this size needs to be addressed

_Business Stop talking shit. This happens when you build in flood lanes.

_Business Apparently the climate never changed and extreme weather conditions never occurred until humans discovered fire says an expert

_Business Newspeak

_Business You meant extreme lack of government control and lack of housing will continue to place residents of informal settlements at risk? Doh!

_Business Extreme funding brought about by philanthropists with place residents of South Africa at Risk according to global trends. Universities are no longer fit for purpose as a result of their funding stream along with MSM.

_Business News24, be better.

_Business Soon poverty will be blamed on climate Change

_Business Have 🇵 🇷 🇴 🇻 🇪 🇳 to be the best Company to invest and make withdrawal with great interest instantly. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜? Deirdremerson is reliable, tested and trusted, with Amazing interests make a move today, delay could be dangerous.

_Business News 24 what utter BS

_Business Climate change is made up, building on a flood plain leave you vulnerable to flooding

_Business ‘Climate change’ has been happening for billions of years & will continue for billions more! 🙄😏

_Business Propaganda24

_Business Building Informal settlements within inches of river banks without a concern for flood lines will continue to place residents at risk.. There, corrected it for you Gina..my pleasure and I'm not an expert..

_Business Understanding environmental fascism - shack dwellers living in squatter camps on river banks are endangered by 'climate change' not by dire poverty and underdevelopment or lack of proper housing. helenzille EFFSouthAfrica Eusebius
