After being understaffed for 15 months, returning backpackers are finally helping to fill the void in hospitality, but some say more needs to be done.

Leanne Modin says international workers are helping her get through the holiday period.abc.net.au/news/returning-backpackers-help-national-staffing-shortage/101798392Business is bustling in the tourist town of Rainbow Beach in south-east Queensland, but a local restaurant owner says without international workers, they wouldn't be able to keep their doors open.

She said after being understaffed for 15 months, returning backpackers were finally helping fill the void. "After Christmas, we're seriously going to sit down and look at probably closing two days a week just so that when we are open we've got well-rested staff." More than 100,000 Working Holiday Maker visas have been granted since July, which is more than the figures for the 2021–2022 financial year and double 2020–2021.Restaurant & Catering Australia chief executive Suresh Manickam said the uptick of international workers has helped struggling hospitality businesses keep their doors open.

Cafes and Gyms.....

Nearly a million on benefits....

' owns three hospitality businesses in town ' Could sell off one or even two business and pay above award wages to employ more local people full time ... then won't have to rely on backpackers ... or even hells' bells, lobby to have visa holders being held back, 'freed' to work.

No one cares about small cafe owners. Shut up and close, we don't care

HEATH FIRST and Staying Safe.

So the problem is that they need international workers who don't know what the minimum wage is

Don't get these stories! How is having to many customers are bad thing? Do they want a recession?

And yet another fatuous story from business owners having a whinge🥱

If your business relies on exploiting people and not paying a living wage, then your business is a failure and should collapse. Your dream should not ride on other people's misery.

More whinging cafe owners calling for ever-more cheap labour. Does the Business Council own ABC now? Perhaps if workers could afford rent, or if there was even anywhere to rent, then it'd be easier to get workers Gov solution to everything is to crush-load us with more people

These businesses need to do more to encourage Aussie's to work for them, more pay cheap rental properties etc. We're looking to get more people here and yet we have 3 million Aussie's living in poverty 120,000 of them homeless FFS.

What a great idea bring in backpackers so we have an unlimited no. of new people to make sick and infect...on the conveyor belt...+100 000 backpackers bringing in new variants and spreading the covid soup...even variants we dont recognise or are unamed because they are new.

They can’t find enough people to exploit.

'We stopped hospitality workers of what little pay they have and don't give them job security and we have no idea why nobody wants to work'

It’s so good that governments are crushing society all over the world to ensure small businesses are a thing of the past. We must ensure the rich get richer and the people poorer in line with WEF globalist agenda.

'Everybody stopped working in hospitality; where did they go?' Presumably to jobs where they get reliable hours and paid a living wage
