The federal and state governments must step in and treat childcare centers like the infrastructure that it is

At the end of September, the child care industry will be facing a crisis. The federal CARES and ARPA funding that has helped stabilize this industry since 2020 will come to an end.

Centers have used the funding to increase staff salaries as well as necessary costs such as food, utilities and rent. Without federal and state intervention, the cost of childcare for families will increase dramatically for the industry to remain viable. Many families already pay monthly fees equal to a rent or mortgage payment, for just one child. It is advantageous for children to attend a program with highly qualified staff.

Early Childhood Educators set our youngest students up for a lifetime of learning, leading with best practices and following the latest research. However, to attract and retain highly qualified teachers for ECE, we need to pay a living wage. Despite having a bachelor’s degree in ECE, many teachers can get a job at a big box store for a higher salary.
