A power company has abandoned plans for a natural gas-fired power plant planned for an already polluted low-income area in New Jersey. Environmental advocates are celebrating, saying the plant would have increased climate emissions and local pollution.

The CPV power plant operates in Woodbridge N.J., on Feb. 27, 2023. The company that owns CPV, Competitive Power Ventures, said Oct. 11, 2023, it is dropping plans to build a second such power plant next to the existing one citing unfavorable economic conditions. Residents and environmental groups strongly opposed the project on environmental justice grounds, saying the area already is plagued by poor air quality. “The CPV power plant scheme would have dumped air pollution into already overburdened communities, and undermined the Murphy administration’s climate goals,” said Charlie Kratovil, an organizer for Food & Water Watch. “The inspiring grassroots movement to stop this plant won a major victory for clean air, environmental justice, and our climate.”
