From pop to UK rap and Afro-bashment, black women artists are rarely heard in the charts – and the blacker your skin, the more invisible you are

A year ago, I wrote an article for this paper asking where all the black women were in grime. Not just as artists and MCs but as managers, journalists, photographers and producers. The genre is now a mainstay of the mainstream and celebrated for championing the voices of diverse Britain, but notable black women remain largely absent. Curious, considering its history is rooted in the lives of Britain’s black working class.

Oh my goodness, the white male fragility in these comments is astonishing. So as white males how much misogynoir and colourism have you lot encountered? I thought this was a relevant, timely article yomiadegoke.

My list of things I don’t give a fuck about just got 1 entry longer, cheers Guardian

I see we're moving on from discrimination against black people onto discrimination against people who aren't black enough. Welcome to the new rabbit hole.

What a non story.

When I was an adolescent and teenager - 60’s & 70’s- the most followed great and famous women singers were black. Perhaps is nothing to do with the color.

Yomi Adegoke you are racist some of the biggest female singers in the world have been and still are black - Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Chaka Khan, Tina Turner, Billy Holiday and so on the reason they are not in grime is it's no good
