The puckish dancer and artistic director of the Sydney Dance Company, Rafael Bonachela, runs his hand over the top of his smooth head and laughs at the photo in front of us.
I spend several days in the sunny company of Bonachela and his team, telling the story of how the Sydney-based but international company he leads has become one of the most revered in the dance community. He has taken a dedicated company of young Australian dancers onto some of the most important stages in the world, including Paris, New York and Moscow, and each year the company sells out its Sydney performances."I've had 15 years in Australia.
He begged his mum to buy him rainbow leg warmers and yellow tracksuits so he could lug his boom box into the streets and make up dances for local kids. His mother obliged, but his father was bewildered. "My father was like, "I'm proud of you, but I cannot tell you and I'm going to make your life difficult.' And I was this 17-year-old who was starting to lose their hair."It can be a lot of things – audacious, thrilling, arousing, funny, joyous, even brutal. If you haven’t discovered contemporary dance yet, there’s a lot you’re missing out on.
"I've been able to see some of what he's done in recent years and he's just telling more and more stories with his voice through dance."
