Gallup released its annual State of the Global Workplace report Wednesday, showing just a third of American employees are considered 'engaged' on the job.

And they're at 70%.

“We're trying to create awareness around the state of the workplace, so leaders understand what workers are going through and how they can improve not only the well-being of people in the workplace but also the performance,” Harter said.Gallup estimates that a lack of employee engagement globally explains about $8.9 trillion in lost productivity, or about 9% of the global economy.“So, there's a lot of room for improvement,” he said.

Employee engagement affects retention rates, productivity, customer service, and profitability, Harter said.
