South Africa say they are putting in extra work to study Australia ahead of the start of the Rugby Championship in Brisbane on Saturday. The Boks are expecting a better Wallaby outfit than the one that bombed out in the group stages of the Rugby World Cup in France last year.
The Springboks are preparing to face an unfamiliar Australian team in a place where historically Bok teams have struggled. Springboks’ assistant coach, Daan Human, does not subscribe to the Brisbane hoodoo theory and insists his team will be ready for Saturday and not burdened by the past. In the past it was the familiarity with South Africa’s Southern Hemisphere rivals, like New Zealand and Australia, that bred contempt, but now the players don’t play one another at franchise level, and have no practical frame of reference, other than what they can study and watch in the week of preparation.
“It is certainly different prepping against them with not having to face the guys the season before it is a little bit different in that way. So, there will just have to be a lot of extra work going into this week with watching player profiles and seeing who is going to play, studying up on guys and studying up on past games throughout the season whereas previously we would have seen that,”
