Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has told the National Assembly how acts of extortion around the country have angered communities. Mchunu was delivering his statement outlining the actions taken by the police to deal with the threat posed by those committing acts of extortion in the country.
He says 73 percent of crimes, including extortion committed in the country in general, happen in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. “Extortions have been emerging over time and has now reached levels where communities in our country beyond all four provinces indicated above have become very angry, bitter and agitated. The pain has gone very deep. The mood expressed in communities all around the country is also reflective of statements that have been made in the House unanimously against these crimes in the short past.
“The modus operandi of the perpetrators involved in this heinous act is well known. Most of them are individuals who don’t want to work, but rather choose to parade as armies of murderous parasites that must be fought and rejected by society. They are often armed operating in groups, instill fear and chaos. The relative silences of communities and low reporting is all due to these fears. So, we offered communities toll free numbers.
