Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen highlights the critical role of the agriculture sector in South Africa's economic development, particularly emphasizing the beer industry's strong recovery and growth. The article explores how local sourcing, sustainable farming practices, and research into climate-resilient barley varieties are driving the industry's success.

Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen says the Agri-sector will always be a critical component to economic development in the country. He was a speaker at Caledon in the Overberg of the Western Cape for the State of the Beer Economy. All alcohol industries suffered significant losses during the COVID-19 pandemic but have shown steady recovery. The beer industry in particular is showing positive signs of growth once more.

“In order to maintain local sourcing and that 95% is that we understand certain crop varietals that will do well in our climate, we understand how to form sustainable, that’s important for local sourcing. We are operating in a global economy.

“Genetically, we look at traits and we look at a lot of research that’s done globally, we have a lot of part all around the world and we try to tap into that obviously and use those specific traits and genes and bring it into our genetics and make use of that so we can obviously have that resilience in the field,” says Rens van der Watt, Head: Barley Breeding Institute.

“They are making inroads I mean, we’ve been partnering with Southern Breweries for almost the past seven years or so we started this partnership in 2016. So, overall, we supported close to about 1 900 farmers and quite amazingly, about 40% to 50% of those farmers were female and of course we do have also young farmers that have been participating. So, it is indeed an opportunity for farmers to participate and also supply that market,” says Farmsol Managing Director Aron Kole.
