Oyster producers fear a desalination plant that could be built near Albany would have a substantial impact on their livelihoods and the surrounding environment.

Western Australia's Water Corporation is considering desalination as part of a plan to future-proof the water supply of the state's Great Southern region. Albany shellfish hatchery manager Jonathon Bilton, who supplied baby oysters, or spat, to the majority of farms in WA, said shellfish larvae were "incredibly sensitive".

The mineral-rich seawater generates algae for the oyster spat, a meticulous process requiring strong biosecurity practices and clean water. Commercial fisherman Tony Westerberg relies on a healthy population of sardines in the sound for his business. Water Corporation Great Southern manager Adrian Stewart said all options for a secure water source for the future were being considered and thoroughly researched.
