FISHING,PHILIPPINE STATISTICS AUTHORITY,LIVELIHOOD

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reports a decrease in the number of younger people participating in fishing, potentially due to livelihood diversification and a decline in interest among youth.

The number of family members engaged in fishing has decreased, likely due to a shift in livelihoods and declining interest among young people, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) census. In its latest report, the agency stated that the average number of fishing operators per household in the Philippines fell by 1.8 percent to 1.03 in 2022, compared to 1.05 percent in 2012.

\The PSA explained that this suggests fishing is becoming more of a household activity with fewer members actively involved as operators, potentially because of livelihood diversification or a decrease in younger generations participating in fishing. \Historical data from 2012 and 2022 revealed that middle-aged fishing operators, those aged 30 to 49, dominated household-based fishing operations. In 2022, the 30 to 39 age group accounted for 25.3 percent or 215,751 fishing operators, followed by the 40 to 49 age group with 25.1 percent or 214,208 operators. Similarly, in 2012, the 30 to 39 age group led with 214,267 operators (26.9 percent), while the 40 to 49 group contributed 209,504 operators (26.4 percent). \However, the PSA reported that fishing operator demographics between 2012 and 2022 showed a decline in those under 50 years old, while those above 50 years old experienced significant growth. \PSA data indicated that fishing operators under 50 years old decreased by 3.6 percent to 557,368 in 2022 from 578,249 in 2012. Conversely, those over 50 years old surged by 36.4 percent to 295,697 from 216,821 during the same period. The agency noted that Zamboanga Peninsula and Caraga displayed significant growth among operators aged 50 years and above, reaching 116.3 percent and 110.0 percent, respectively
