Lord Iveagh has repossessed the Iveagh Market in Dublin's south inner city in the latest twist in a long-running planning row. The market, which was built in 1906 by the Iveagh Trust, has been derelict for over 20 years |

The locks have been changed, a new security team has taken over and there are plans to restore the building to its original market use.

The market, which was built in 1906 by the Iveagh Trust, has been derelict for over 20 years and the subject of a legal battle between Dublin City Council and businessman Martin Keane. Martin Keane, who owns Oliver St John Gogarty's Pub and Blooms Hotel in Temple Bar, paid the council €2m for the right to develop a 'Covent Garden style' facility with a restored market as well as hotel, restaurant and bar facilities.

The council has expressed concern at the "rapidly deteriorating" state of the market, which it estimates would cost €30m to repair.

Well done Lord Iveagh, this would make a great little venue to replace the Tivoli which was knocked down last year 😉👍

Fantastic news This building should have always been in use & not left to fall apart as it has done for so long.

Fantastic I hope it works out for the area and that finally something can be done to restore it and reopen it .

Bring back the market. No more hotels

Maybe give it to the people of the local community, county council will blow millions on it and keep it for the elite. No more hotels and pubs should be built in Ireland we’ve too many that never reach capacity, big business only makes a few people rich, spread the wealth fairly

The irony of Smihwick representing Guinness. It would be great to see it restored and full of traders and shoppers

Brilliant news Up the Iveagh Market!!

The negative tone of the reporter is striking

louisemcsharry What a beautiful building with *so* much potential for restoration & *such* a shame it’s gone to ruin. Would be wonderful to see a restored market full of people and life and colour again?! 🤞🏻

Does repossess mean he had a claim to it?

Who’s Lord Iveagh, yeh yeh guinness heir but who is he?

Jaysus! The state of that place 😳

Glad to see something will happen with this amazing building. Bring back the markets to the Iveagh Market!!

So happy to hear this!!

Excellent new. Well done to Lord Iveagh, he deserves the support of all.

Disgraceful this is lying derelict for 20 years. And more years to come in the courts no doubt.

Let’s hope something finally happens now, it’s criminal to have allowed the build deteriorate, the City Council are the main culprits

CPO the damn thing.

The main thing is that we keep everything the same forever and never make new use of anything. Because change is terrifying.

Good on Ned Iveagh! He runs a very successful business at Elveden Estate in Suffolk and his ancestors benevolence and generosity to the City and People of Dublin deserves far better stewardship than the incompetence of Dublin Corporation DublinCityHall ElvedenEstate AnTaisce
