Canadian Tire will close all National Sports stores despite posting 'phenomenal' Q4 earnings

All 18 of the retail stores across southern Ontario will be closing, Gregory Craig, the retailer's chief financial officer, told investors on Thursday.

National Sports, which carries sportswear, shoes and gear, was launched in 1968 as National Gym Clothing Ltd., according to its website. In addition to a density of physical stores, he said there is an overlap between e-commerce capabilities as well. Meanwhile, the decision came as Hicks told investors that the company's fourth-quarter results were "nothing short of phenomenal" and that its full-year results were strong despite the challenges of operating during a pandemic.

I hope they start sharpen skates at Canadian tire

Makes sense... their focus seems to be on the expansion of their banking business now.

That's too bad. Sure, they what they sold was mostly junk, but now there are just more people who are gonna be out of a job

I blame branding. With looking the part such an important part of getting athlete fame on Instagram i think national sports has lost alot of sales on impulse items that likely had a higher profit margin than high budget items. Think sweat bands water bottles, stuff like that.

Sad to see. Was undoubtedly the best sports store in Ontario. Canadian Tire and Sport Chek aren’t gonna cut it for real athletes
