Today we're down to producing around 10% of the world's chips. Where is it written that America can't lead the world once again in manufacturing? I don't know where that's written, and we're proving it can.' — Joe Biden in Phoenix at TSMC site.

The latest salvo in the global battle between China and the United States to dominate production of tiny computer chips was fired Tuesday in Phoenix.

"Over 30 years ago America had more than 30% of the global chip production, then something happened. America manufacturing, the backbone of our economy, began to get hollowed out, companies moved jobs overseas. Today we're down to producing around 10% of the world's chips," Biden said on Tuesday during the ceremony."Where is it written that America can't lead the world once again in manufacturing? I don't know where that's written, and we're proving it can.

The company is also planning to produce some of the world's most advanced semiconductors, with 4- and 3-nanometer chips expected to be made at its first and second Arizona factory, respectively. Chips are like tiny"brains" that power electronic devices and TSMC's chips are used in such high-end electronics as smartphones, AI, supercomputing, autonomous vehicles and more. The smaller the nanometer on a chip, the more power-efficient the chip is.

In addition to bringing 4,500 direct jobs to Phoenix, the TSMC is expected to create more than 21,000 construction jobs and 13,000 jobs at supplier companies and is expected to have a $12.3 billion direct economic output in the region, according to new Greater Phoenix Economic Council data. "As many of you know, we work with TSMC to manufacture the chips that help power our products all over the world, and we look forward to expanding this work in the years to come as TSMC forms new and deeper roots in America," Cook said."This is an incredibly significant moment. It’s the chance for the United States to usher in a new era in advanced manufacturing."The first fab totals about 4.5 million square feet and includes the 2.

Supplier equipment that will be used in the first fab includes advanced machines from Applied Materials, ASM, Lam Research, Tokyo Electron, KLA and ASML, according to materials provided by TSMC.
