The failure of the education system to ensure school-leavers have fundamental literacy and numeracy skills is putting additional pressures on employers.

Tim Reed, president of the Business Council of Australia, says the number of people entering the workforce with just the barest of foundational skills poses a challenge as employers try to remediate what was not learned during 13 years of school.“It is a real challenge for businesses that an increasing part of the community don’t have basic skills in numeracy, literacy and digital skills,” Mr Reed told the Universities Australia conference in Canberra.

“A good example is certificate III in electrotechnology. That turns out our electricians. The people entering that now do not necessarily have the mathematical skills that you need for success. There’s a lot more support that’s needed [from TAFEs].Data from last year’s National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy revealed that revealed 13.

Mr Reed said this posed additional problems for businesses when they were conducted mandatory training in areas such as occupational health and safety and sexual harassment.
