The NSW government’s potential removal of the $3000 subsidy for electric vehicles would be counterproductive and hinder the uptake of low-emission vehicles, according to the industry body.

would be counterproductive and make it harder for low-emission vehicles to gain a foothold in the Australian market, the peak EV industry body says.

In 2021, the cheapest EV in Australia was MG’s ZS for $44,990. In 2023, it is the BYD Dolphin for $38,390. Incentives had contributed to the accelerated uptake of EVs in Australia, despite the absence of fuel efficiency standards to encourage a broader range of low-emissions vehicles to be offered to the market.

“Given all of those moving policy changes, we’re going to have to say something about it in the ... budget, which is due in a month’s time, but any government faced with that set of policy circumstances would have to take it into consideration.”
