Gap plans to separate into two independent publicly traded companies, with Old Navy becoming a standalone company

Gap Inc. said Thursday that it plans to split itself into two independent publicly traded companies—one unnamed company consisting of the iconic Gap brand, and Old Navy.

The yet-to-be-named company will include its Gap brand, Athleta, Banana Republic, Intermix and Hill City. Gap’s current President and Chief Executive, Art Peck, will hold the same position with the new company after the planned separation, Gap said. Sonia Syngal, current President and CEO of Old Navy, will continue to lead that brand as a standalone business.

So who keeps the sweatshirts?

Wow! Is old navy doing so well it can stand alone?

Very hesitate as when this split happens one will ride and the other won't make it

Am I the only one who thought they were already two separate companies?

and how many Old Navy stores in Canada will close because of this ?

Didn’t realize people still shop at either of them 🤷‍♀️

I’m just sad 4 all the people who r going 2 b out of a job. I applied to 212 jobs and got 3 interviews out of that. Good luck everyone 😺

interesting ...!

Gap still hanging around?

Noooo

Gap used to be my favorite store ! But has increasingly gotten so bad that I don’t even look at their website !

And then close all stores, but not before declaring bankruptcy in order to break their pension fund. And then reorganize and reopen with out those pesky pensioners. 🇺🇸

The GAP has not remained relevant. In the late 90’s everyone went to/wore GAP; today, just a few die hard enthusiasts. The GAP doesn’t have an identity anymore; doesn’t have good price points, isn’t using social media/video well; & hasn’t connected with younger demographics.

I always thought they were two separate companies.

Clutches pearls...😢

The day they split also is the same day I found out they were the same company

StephStMartin

What about a gap year? 😉

Time for a motherfuckin pun. 🤘

I dont know why they didn't been do this Gap and OldNavy is not the same Not in any way shape or form They are both great companies, however, I believe they deserve to be separated and see if that will affect them in any way. They are both good with or without. They good.

I’m sorry but who shops at either one of these stores anymore

🕵️‍♀️

I didn't know they were one company.

I still have a baby gap denim jacket that fits

I used to manage Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic’s hangtags, or price tags, quad-patches, inserts, etc... So if you bought anything, from any of these places back in ‘07/08ish...

Seriously, just call it a day and close all three. So irrelevant.

They were one company?

so like will my employee discount still work at gap lmao

And soon after Gap will meet the same fate PaylessInsider⌛️ RealTalk People shope more at OldNavy than the 'higher-end' subsidiaries BananaRepublic etc. And it's more evident now that OldNavy is the only of Gap brand that consistently rakes in over $1B FACTS

Nobody even shops there anymore

I’m team OldNavy

I didn’t know they were the same...

I'm sure alot of people will lose their jobs. I hope they get severence. Gap TheGap OldNavy

IMO they were basically the same or you could find the same styles at each with pricing more giving at one. Quality of clothing was hit & miss at each. We’ll just “Mind the Gap” as they say in the UK & still browse Old Navy as usual.

I always thought it was a bit much with the merge in the first place. So, I stop shopping there...my interests was watered...muddled with all the collab going on with them.

You mean they were one?

Need those 💳 accounts. ragebossocho save10perfect

So... What happens to Banana Republic?

I thought they were separate this whole time😮

👀👀👀👀👀 CourtneyCasey

I read this as “GOP .. “

Gap’s still a thing? I don’t think I’ve bought anything from Gap since the mid 90’s lol

ThursdayThoughts FridayThoughts gap oldnavy wsj

this is preposterous!

Gap is going to suffer the most.

So the gap splits? 🤔

YO WHAT ABOUT MY REWARDS THOUGH

PVHCorp should buy / absorb Gap to save & rebrand...it fits along the lines, look, clean classic feel of Calvin Klein. Would hate to see the brang go / dissolve.

This is a stupid financial move that I do not understand

Both need to revamp a little bit...but i like both. Classic American brands.

There goes my 4 in 1 credit card 😑

Oh snap!

toughest celebrity break-up yet

Well this is news.... I thought they were two companies.

Are you telling me they aren’t the same copycat companies

Imagine the revenue if only years ago Gap and Old Navy were thought of as two, separate companies

the comments on this tweet though JustPopFashion

OldNavy sells garbage products while gap sells decent quality. I'd get the better brand away from the other as soon as possible too

I still don't want the credit card.

I haven't shopped at old navy in 15+ years. It's probably been 10 years since I bought something from Gap.

What about people jobs

AsYouuuWiiish There goes my Old Navy employee discount for working for Gap Inc. I'm still too big for clothes from Banana Republic or Gap.

Maybe

why is it that big companies split fashion business

What!? They are the same company? I never knew 🤷🏽‍♀️

I use to love Gap. But their quality has been turning into old navy quality lately. Ugh

Wow!

And yet, they will look exactly the same

The year OldNavy offered Tall and Petite sizes and upgraded the style of their clothing, Gap should have shuttered their name brand and poured all that money into BananaRepublic and OldNavy. This move is over a decade too late.YoureWelcome

The most iconic break up since Brad and Jen... 💔

The Gap is too expensive they are not going to last.

No one shops at Gap. Overpriced. Low quality.

I didn’t even know they were together.

The Gap clothes have been meh for like at least 10 years now. The quality of the jeans today cant touch the ones from the early 2000s. The clothes are so bland & boring. I think Old Navy is what kept Gap alive for hipness. AE is what Gap used to be. No opinion on the other brands

I feel like this will work out better for Old Navy than it will for Gap

Old Navy about to drown!

Quality of the clothing for OldNavy has become just crap every clothing article is paper thin and gap lost their way with who loved their clothes. They decided to try to trend should have stayed with classy basics

Why change something that's been working for us for years canceling my credit card with gap & OldNavy

Disgusting!!! Greedy never shopping there again only Abercrombie I will shop at for now on

I thought they were?

........can we get more of THIS please?

JoshuaEscobar23 Nosz5 alxsalch

Wow this is big news! Interesting to hear what employees are saying about this!

I was leaning on a display at Gap here in El Paso while wife was shopping in the store. Some young guy came & tld me to stop leaning on it because I was ruining his scene. I told my wife to abandon her basket & we left. Stupid snot thought he worked at Saks.

There goes Gap!

Pay wall again.....

Greatttt, so they’re still gunna be a ridiculously over priced khaki loving $50 a shirt kinda place . Cool cool cool 👌🏻😒

Both companies who produces cheap, ill-fitting, low quality clothes.

Maybe get both won't suck anymore.

Sounds to me like Gap Inc is about to take on all of Old Navy's debts and will then file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection, freeing the 'surviving' company of all their troubles. theamericanway

Not a fan of neither honestly

Yeah because old navy is good gap sucks, so basically gap is another one to bite the dust

😯

Gap style has been uggo for a couple of years- used to be a reliable go-to for the basics. If I were old navy I’d split too 😏

They both better still take the same card

But what about my free shipping?! 😫

All their companies have stupid names anyway

Both are crap

True story: The Gap in my local mall closed 1.5 yrs ago (was told by the shoe store in its place) and I didn't even notice til recently.

They were one company before?

Never knew they were together! Two totally different quality of clothes.

freakytire well damn 😨

In other words. Gap will be going bankrupt soon.

Closing 230 Gaps....another one bites the dust w online shopping. Bye 👋

Old Gap.

Why don’t they just close?

Ok... So instead of 1 irrelevant company to my life... It will be 2 irrelevant companies to my life... They have my endorsement to do this then... it changes nothing

So there will be a Gap between them now?

My friend used to get the best five finger discount from there

Good!

Gap and Old Navy are still around? Eh. Nobody shops there.

I thought they already were

Cut off the dying gap for its final voyage

This sounds like a rich white people issue. Don't get me wrong I wish this was somehow important to me.

Wow! I am a Banana Republic kid and all the companies were always one.

Tooth Gap and Thigh Gap

This is a much clearer sentence than the one you emailed me. 'Gap said it plans to split itself into two independent publicly traded companies, one unnamed company consisting of the iconic Gap brand and Old Navy.' May I suggest cross-channel coordination?

That’s the way it used to be 🙄

Is it true was founded by a communist?

That's going to open a really, really wide gap...
