Gedling Borough Council will hold a consultation on a permanent relocation

There are plans for the relocated Arnold Market traders to stay in Eagle Square until at least the end of 2024. Traders were moved to the square from their original town centre location after 50 years while the works were carried out on the £4m Arnold Market Place development, which opened in 2022.

Gedling Borough Council is planning for the traders to stay at the Eagle Square location for another year before a consultation on a permanent relocation takes place. Arnold Market is made up of stalls trading on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays selling products including fruit and veg, fashion and butchery.

Council documents said: “The council will shortly be undertaking a consultation with a view to the permanent relocation of the market to Eagle Square. This was scheduled to take place in 2022, but due to a restructure and changes in staffing this was delayed.” Previously, traders said they wanted to make the move permanent. The current extension to the arrangement is set to expire in December 2023.

The extension will be discussed at the Environment and Licensing Committee on October 31. The council said the decision is not in line with the council’s Street Trading Policy – but it added that Eagle Square “has proven to be the only viable option for the market to continue to operate while the consultation for permanent relocation is undertaken”.
