For many, sharing a beer with friends is a simple pleasure: kicking back, relaxing, and celebrating with friends and loved ones. So, it’s more than a little ironic that the thousands of Canadians who make, sell, and deliver beer are facing uncertainties about their livelihood, meaning celebration is about the last thing on their minds. On April 1, the federal beer tax is scheduled to increase by 4.

Now is not the time for a historic increase in the tax on beer that will drive up prices. This tax policy will add to inflationary pressures, making life even less affordable for Canadians. Even closer to home for those who work in the brewing industry, we know that we’re already being affected by unfavourable economic conditions. Beer sales are far from buoyant and continue to track well below pre-pandemic levels.
