This environmentally sustainable magnesium oxide is produced without generating further downstream waste or tailings.

A New South Wales-based company has produced, for the first time ever, magnesium oxide from coal fly ash waste. The development is seen as a major step in sustainable extraction.

All of the fly ash feed material for the plant is processed using Latrobe’s patented hydrometallurgical extraction process, which produces these valuable by-products without generating further downstream waste or tailings, reportedOxide production from Fly Ash. A major step in sustainable extraction using patented hydromet process. Now producing MgO for customer sales before magnesium metal production.

During the development, the company processed 100% of the waste fly ash feed material to produce five valuable byproducts. “We are incredibly proud of the results from our Demonstration Plant and the achievement of MgO production. The world’s first flow sheet using a hydromet process is a testament to our technology, our staff and contractors involved in the process to date,” said
