It marks the latest project to transform empty high street properties, with the refurbishment of a former DWP office having been among the major developments

Empty units above a Nottinghamshire market are set to be transformed into flats as part of efforts to upgrade empty high street properties across the area. Two flats will end up being created above the Moor Market on Low Moor Road in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, with the two commercial units currently standing empty.

One of the flats will be a one-bed property, whilst the other will be a two-bedroom flat. The Moor Market itself was opened in 2021, made up of three former vacant retail units. The indoor trading area provides space for seven market stalls and a café, with services to have already been based at the market including a new banking hub. Confirming the transformation of the space above the market, Ashfield District Council says in a new report: "This project... involves the purchase, repurposing, refurbishment, and energy efficiency improvements of high street properties...

Other projects to have benefitted from the funding in Ashfield include the transformation of two empty properties in the centre of Sutton, previously occupied by Yorkshire Bank and YMCA. Another major project delivered under the funding was the opening of High Pavement House in Sutton, previously occupied by the DWP and now operating as an office block with 14 units available for businesses.
