With the high interest-rate environment, banks nowadays are more keen on arranging sustainability-linked financing as many regular deals soured due to the high yield demanded by various investment instruments.
In May 2022, BDO Unibank Inc., the country’s biggest lender, was first to issue a blue bond worth $100 million through an investment from the International Finance Corp. The funding package includes a P6 billion sustainability-linked bond, which was listed for trading at the Philippine Dealing and Exchange Corp., and a P14.5 billion sustainability-linked loan, also from the IFC.
“It is critical for the private and public sectors to collaborate in order to facilitate effective mobilization of resources, better exchange of knowledge and expertise, as well as expedite large-scale projects that benefit all parties,” he said. “Participation of big businesses in forums goes beyond business continuity plans and social responsibility efforts. This is about preparing our people to prepare our communities and businesses for success in the face of a changing environment,” he said.
To address the various climate related challenges and financial risks and opportunities facing the Philippines, the financial sector regulatory authorities, which include the SEC and the central bank, has set up an extensive engagement on greening the financial sector in the country. The SFTG offers a simplified approach for the assessment of micro, small and medium enterprises’ activity for financing, to ensure that they were not excluded from participating in sustainable finance.
The SEC has signed a memorandum of agreement with Komunidad for the development of the web-based SEC Sustainability Reporting Framework Application.
