The UK Prime Minister has vowed to prevent companies from hiring abroad amid a record surge in net migration. As the UK's net migration reached a record 906,000 in 2023, the Prime Minister pledged to introduce measures to curb hiring foreign workers, particularly in sectors like engineering and IT.
However, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) highlighted that businesses already face increased costs due to a rise in employer national insurance, and they require immigration to address current shortages. A white paper is expected early in the New Year to detail these measures
