“I used to come in here as a kid with my mum and my grandma on a Saturday morning, trying to tap them up to buy something,” Gary Lewis jokes.
He’s chatting to the M.E.N. in the basement of the grade-II listed building, which enticed shoppers for more than half-a-century as a Paulden’s, then Debenhams, department store. But it won’t be drawing in shoppers at the same volume again. The ground floor and basement will be leisure space, with Jeff and colleague Mike Cunniff suggesting this could be a foodie spot, on the same tour with Gary.
“There’s key views of the city, and it’s a prominent building. We worked really hard to make stepped back so it’s not overbearing.”
